“In Territorio, Every Dog Has A Name, A Second Chance And Everything We Can Manage To Provide For Them. The Only Thing We Refuse To Give Them Is An Expiration Date.”

Frequently referred to as “Land Of The Strays,” or “Dog Heaven”  Territorio de Zaguates is the largest stray free roaming dog shelter in the world. Here people can run the country side with a pack of close to 1000 stray dogs. If after spending time with the pack you bond with a specific dog you can adopt him, or her on the spot. This little piece of doggy of heaven is situated in the beautiful Costa Rica country side far away from the bustling, stressful urban areas where most of these dogs come from.

Once at the shelter it’s residents have absolutely nothing to worry about. These dogs get everything and more by the caring volunteers who run the facility. Unlike most dog shelters these dogs don’t need to become adopted to become saved. They are saved the day the become a resident of the ranch. It is an absolutely no-kill shelter where dogs, if not adopted can live out their lives in a relaxed, stress free, healthy environment.

Territorio de Zaguates was founded by two very special people, husband and wife team Alvaro Saumet and Lya Battle. The two have struggled to keep the ranch above water, but have managed through hard work and private donations. They are also helped by several volunteers who take care of the many daily tasks on the ranch.  Alvaro Saumet said, “We have struggled daily against naysayers, haters, near-sighted government officials and ministries, terrible shortages and daily challenges of our own, though it has always been worth it.”

If you’d like to help Alvaro Saumet and Lya Battle with their cause fund doggy heaven
